Facebook and Instagram ads can bring a steady flow of enquiries for a local business, but only if they are set up for results rather than likes. This is the setup we use for a first campaign, step by step.

Before you start

  • A Business portfolio (business.facebook.com) with your Facebook Page and Instagram account connected
  • A payment method added in your own name, so the ad account stays yours
  • Somewhere for people to land: a WhatsApp number, an Instagram or Messenger inbox, a lead form, or a fast landing page
  • If you use a website, the Meta Pixel (and ideally the Conversions API) installed, so Meta can see who enquires

Boost or Ads Manager?

The Boost button is quick but gives you little control over goals, audiences and placements. For anything beyond a quick test, use Ads Manager. It is free to use; you only pay for the ads.

Step 1: Choose the right objective

Meta has six campaign objectives: Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion and Sales. For a local business that wants enquiries:

  • Leads when you want names and numbers through an instant form or your website
  • Engagement with a messaging destination when you want people to start a chat on WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram
  • Sales when people buy or book on your website and the Pixel is tracking it

Meta shows your ads to people likely to do what you chose, so the objective decides who you reach.

Step 2: Pick where results happen

Inside the ad set, choose the conversion location: Instant forms, Website, Messaging apps or Calls. Choose the one your team can handle best. If nobody answers the phone, do not choose calls.

Step 3: Set the audience

  • Location: your town or a radius around your shop. For services you deliver, include the areas you actually serve.
  • Age: set it only if it truly matters for your business.
  • Advantage+ audience: let Meta find people beyond your suggestions. Very narrow interest targeting usually costs more and limits results.

Step 4: Placements

Keep Advantage+ placements on, so Meta can use Facebook, Instagram, Reels and Stories. Make sure your creative works in vertical 9:16 format, because Reels and Stories are where much of the attention is.

Step 5: Budget and the learning phase

Choose a daily budget you can keep for at least two to four weeks. Meta needs time to learn who responds; it says an ad set needs about 50 results in a week to leave the learning phase. Avoid changing the budget, audience or creatives every day, because each big change restarts learning.

Step 6: Creative that gets enquiries

  • Test two to four different ads, not one
  • Grab attention in the first three seconds of a video
  • Show the result, the product or the person, not just a logo
  • Say clearly what you offer and what to do next ("Message us on WhatsApp for a free quote")
  • Add captions; many people watch without sound

Step 7: Measure what matters

Look at cost per result, but also the quality of the leads: how many replied, booked or bought. Reply fast; a lead contacted within minutes is far more likely to convert than one called the next day.

Common mistakes

  • Boosting posts for likes when you want enquiries
  • Targeting all of India for a shop in one city
  • Stopping ads after two days because "it is not working"
  • Sending people to a slow website with no WhatsApp or call button
  • Nobody replying to messages on evenings and weekends

Questions people ask

Should I boost posts or use Ads Manager?

Use Ads Manager when you want enquiries or sales. It lets you choose the objective, audience, placements and destination. Boosting is fine for a quick visibility test.

How much should I spend on Facebook and Instagram ads?

Start with a daily budget you can keep for two to four weeks without stress. That gives Meta enough data to learn, and gives you real numbers to decide whether to spend more.

Do I need a website to run Meta ads?

No. You can collect enquiries with instant lead forms or send people straight to WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram messages. A website helps when you want to track sales or bookings.
