"How much does SEO cost?" has an honest answer that sounds unhelpful at first: it depends. But it depends on a handful of clear things, and once you know them you can compare quotes properly and spot the ones that will waste your money.

What decides the cost

  • Competition: ranking a bakery in a small town takes less work than ranking a law firm in a big city.
  • Local or national: showing up on Google Maps in your area is a smaller job than ranking across India.
  • The state of your website: a slow site with technical problems needs fixing before anything else works.
  • How much content is needed: service pages, location pages and blog posts take time to research and write.
  • Number of locations: each branch needs its own Google Business Profile and local work.
  • Who does what: if you can write content or collect reviews yourself, the agency does less.

The usual pricing models

Monthly retainer

The most common model. You pay a fixed amount each month for an agreed set of work: fixes, content, local SEO and a report. SEO builds over time, so this matches how it works.

One-time audit or setup project

A fixed price to audit your site and fix the foundations: technical issues, titles, Google Business Profile, analytics. Good if you have a team to continue the work, or before deciding on a retainer.

Hourly consulting

Useful when you have an in-house person who needs guidance rather than someone to do the work.

"Pay only for rankings"

Be careful. It sounds safe, but it often targets easy keywords nobody searches for, so you pay for rankings that bring no customers.

What a fair monthly package includes

  • A clear list of the work planned each month
  • Technical fixes and page improvements on your website
  • Google Business Profile management and review strategy
  • New or improved content for the searches your customers make
  • A monthly report showing rankings, traffic, calls and what comes next
  • Access stays in your name: your website, Google profile and Search Console are yours

Red flags

  • Guaranteed first position on Google. Nobody can honestly guarantee a ranking; Google says the same.
  • Very cheap packages promising hundreds of backlinks. Bulk, low-quality links can harm your site.
  • No reports, or reports with only "keywords in top 100". You should see calls, enquiries and traffic.
  • The agency keeps your accounts. If they leave, you should keep everything.
  • Long lock-in contracts with no exit. Good work keeps clients without trapping them.

How to compare quotes

Ask every agency the same questions: what exactly they will do each month, how they will report results, how long before you should see movement, and who owns the work. Compare the scope, not just the price. A cheaper quote that skips content or local SEO is not cheaper if it brings nothing.

Think in customers, not keywords

Work out what one new customer is worth to you over a year. If SEO brings even a few extra customers a month once it builds up, you can judge whether a quote makes sense for your business.

Questions people ask

Is SEO a one-time cost?

The setup and fixes can be one-time, but rankings depend on ongoing work: content, reviews, links and keeping up with competitors. Most businesses treat SEO as a monthly investment.

How long before SEO shows results?

Fixes to your website and Google profile can help within weeks. Ranking for competitive searches usually takes three to six months of steady work.

Is cheap SEO worth it?

Price alone is not the problem; the work behind it is. Very cheap packages often rely on bulk backlinks or automated content that can hurt your site. Ask exactly what will be done each month.
