When someone searches "dentist near me" or "cake shop in Dehradun", Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any website. Those three get most of the calls and direction requests. Local SEO is the work of getting your business into that group, and keeping it there.

How Google decides who shows on the map

Google says local results are based mainly on three things:

  • Relevance: how well your Business Profile matches what the person searched for.
  • Distance: how far your business is from the searcher, or from the place named in the search.
  • Prominence: how well known and trusted your business is, judged from reviews, links, mentions and your overall presence online.

You cannot move your shop closer to every customer, so the work goes into relevance and prominence.

1. Complete your Google Business Profile properly

Your profile is the foundation. Verify it, choose the right categories, add hours, phone, website, services and real photos. Our Google Business Profile checklist walks through every field in 15 minutes.

The primary category matters more than any other field. If you are a "Physiotherapist", do not choose "Medical clinic" because it sounds bigger. Then add secondary categories for other things you genuinely offer. Look at the top three businesses for your main search to see which categories they use.

3. Get reviews steadily and reply to every one

Reviews feed prominence and help people choose you. Ask every happy customer, send your review link on WhatsApp right after the job, and reply to every review within a few days. A steady flow every month looks more natural than 30 reviews in one week and then nothing.

4. Make your website back up your profile

Google checks that your profile and website tell the same story:

  • Put your business name, address and phone number in the footer, exactly as on your profile.
  • Give each main service its own page, written for your area.
  • If you serve several towns, create a genuinely useful page for each, not copies with the city name swapped.
  • Embed a Google map on your contact page and add LocalBusiness structured data.

5. Get listed where your customers look

Add your business to the directories people in your industry use, plus Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. Keep the name, address and phone number identical everywhere; mismatched details make Google less sure about you.

6. Earn local mentions

Links and mentions from local websites build prominence: a local news story, an association you belong to, a supplier's "where to buy" page, an event you sponsor. One genuine local mention is worth more than dozens of random directory links.

7. Keep the profile active

Add new photos every month, post an update every week, answer messages quickly and update your hours for holidays. An active profile tells Google and customers that the business is open and cared for.

What not to do

  • Adding keywords to your business name ("Sharma Dental Best Dentist Dehradun")
  • Using a virtual office or a fake address to appear in another area
  • Creating a second profile for the same location
  • Buying reviews or posting fake ones

These shortcuts can get the profile suspended, which costs far more than they ever gain.

Check where you rank

Search your main keyword in a private browser window from your shop, then ask a friend a few kilometres away to do the same. Rankings change with location, so check from where your customers actually are.

Questions people ask

Why is my business not showing on Google Maps?

The most common reasons are an unverified or incomplete profile, a primary category that does not match the search, few reviews, or details that do not match your website. Searching from a different location can also change what you see.

Does posting on Google Business Profile help ranking?

Posts keep your profile active and give customers fresh reasons to call. They work best together with a complete profile, steady reviews and a website that matches your details.

Can I rank on Google Maps in a city where I do not have an address?

Distance is one of the three main factors, so it is hard. For areas you serve but are not located in, set them as service areas and create useful pages on your website for them.
